It was a real word in Shakespeare's time - eg in Henry IV Part I "Then let me hear of you, my gentle cousin Westmoreland, what yesternight our Council did decree in forwarding this dear expedience" or Hamlet "My Lord, I think I saw him yesternight". Your son is obviously of a literary bent...
